Of course, LSE students needed a base in which to meet and from which to circulate propaganda among themselves, to other colleges and to workers. The ULU authorities had offered minor obstruction to the LSE militants, but there was no definite prospect that ULU would be closed to us. In any case, even if convenient it was not essential. And LSE students could not be mobilised to defend its use – indeed only a few of them could be mobilised for anything at that point. There was little justification in the LSE struggle itself for seizing ULU – unless it was argued that this would spark off nationwide actions. And, this was in fact the basis on which the occupation was voted, by a meeting in which LSE students were a small minority. Outsiders, identified with Maoist and Posadist tendencies, proposed an occupation in order to establish a ‘revolutionary centre’ for the ‘working masses’. They were not challenged by an NLR spokesman from LSE whose ‘heroic’ speech decided the issue – he too saw the act as indicating a ‘rebirth of a revolutionary movement’. LSE students who spoke against it, and for maintaining direction of the struggle by LSE students, were shouted down.
It became clear the next day that LSE students who had not been present the previous night were even further alienated by this ‘revolutionisation’ of their struggle. It was a big mistake for the militants, because it gave the impression that the struggle was not for non-revolutionaries in LSE, but for ‘revolutionaries’ from all over London (who were themselves isolating themselves from any local base they may have had). It could not have the effect outside LSE which only a strong united stand of the LSE students themselves could have had. The LSE militants began to understand that this was what they had to work towards, and that the ULU occupation was actually a threat to this task. On Tuesday the occupation was ended by a virtually unanimous vote of LSE militants. Many of those who had supported it on Monday were however to disappear from the scene after this, and left-wingers in other colleges who did not understand what was done were disillusioned.
When King Mob was going at full blast, after the LSE sit~in there was a sit‑in at the University of London Union and we got involved in that. It lasted several days Everyone was sleeping on the floor and all that. The New Left crowd tried to run it. We gave Robin Blackburn a really bad time, howled him down, told him he was a wanker. They were very worried this, we might damage things ‑ don’t scratch the paintwork ‑ so a bunch of people went and bust open the swimming pool and had this huge swimming party. The whole thing was very fraught because you’d got this mass of students, the New Left people telling them to be serious and responsible, and King Mob telling them to get their rocks off, let it all hang out, etc. It was very iffy, because the great mass in the middle were swaying both ways.

On 20th January 2009, Kings College students occupied a lecture theatre to demand the immediate revocation of then Israeli President Shimon Peres’s Honorary Doctorate, awarded to him the previous November by the College without consultation of the students. Shimon Peres was dubbed “the butcher of Qana” for his role in the massacre of this Lebanese village in 1996. As the Israeli president, he was responsible for the 2009 massacre in Gaza and the ongoing blockade.
Over 50 students took over a lecture theatre at the Central London Strand campus on the morning of the 20th, following a wave of protest occupations that have swept across UK universities.
SOAS, LSE and Essex universities began the movement in solidarity with Palestine after the start of the Gaza onslaught, and numerous other universities followed. Kings students took action hoping to put pressure on the university to condemn the Israeli offence on Gaza and Revoke Peres’s award and show solidarity to the people in Gaza.
The move came following the King’s College Council decision to award President Shimon Peres with an honorary doctorate for “recognition of the efforts of Mr Peres to find a peaceful solution to conflicts in the Middle East” in November 2008, and the subsequent silence of the Principal following the devastating assault on the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli invasion and attack on Gaza killed over thousands of Palestinians and injured tens of thousands. Many thousands of civilians were left homeless. There were international calls for an investigation into the war crimes committed during the attack, wherein Israel stood accused of using banned weapons such as phosphorus bombs, attacking medical facilities, including the killing of 12 ambulance men in marked vehicles, and killing large numbers of policemen who had no military role, amongst other actions.
Occupation spokeswoman Victoria said, “The Principal’s initial response did not answer our concerns. Peres’s role in the Qana massacre in April 1996, involving the shelling of a UN refugee camp in Lebanon, was completely ignored. Given the very serious war crimes allegations that Israel is now facing due to its recent actions in the Gaza Strip, we are once again calling on the doctorate to be immediately revoked by King’s College London.”

turnout is the biggest attendance for any event ever organised by Socialist Appeal, the Marxist tendency in Britain. And most noticeably, this large attendance was matched by an equally impressive level of political and theoretical discussion.
In both quantity and quality, then, Revolution Festival 2020 shows that the Marxists in Britain are going from strength to strength.
Belly of the beast
Saturday’s discussions concluded with a plenary rally on the upcoming US elections, taking place in the context of the deepest crisis in the history of capitalism.
Alan Woods, editor of In Defence of Marxism, started the rally by providing a perspective on the global situation. He explained how the capitalist system is at a complete impasse, and how the bourgeois politicians have no answers or solutions to offer.
After Alan was Tom Trottier from the editorial board of Socialist Revolution, sister publication of Socialist Appeal: written from within the belly of the beast, in the USA.
Alan succinctly summarised the underlying message of the festival: capitalism has got to go – and workers and youth must arm themselves with Marxist ideas in order to put an end to this rotten system.
One of the most important points to take away from the weekend, as Alan underlined, is the essential need for theory. Marxist ideas are not a matter of secondary importance; they are not an optional extra for those genuinely seeking to change the world.
As Lenin famously remarked, without revolutionary theory, there can be no revolutionary movement. Marxist theory is therefore vital as a guide to action, to organising, and to smashing capitalism.
The Revolution Festival – along with this summer’s International Marxist University – have been important landmarks in showing the power and necessity of Marxist ideas, which are only genuinely defended and represented these days by the International Marxist Tendency.

“Marx was a genius; we others were at best talented.” The secret to the friendship between Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels – perhaps the greatest intellectual companionship in Western political thought – lay in Engels’s acceptance of Marx’s philosophical prowess.
So Friedrich Engels chose to sacrifice much of what gave him meaning and pleasure in life to support the work of Marx. For two long decades, working as a mill-owner in Manchester, he played the role of a cotton-lord capitalist, to fund the intellectual origins of Marxism. Yet we should never think of Engels just as Marx’s money-man. In fact, not only did his time in the Manchester textile trade provide first-hand data for the writing of Das Kapital, he was also responsible for some of Marxism’s more interesting applications. More than that, it was Engels’s codification of Marx’s philosophy – particularly after Karl’s death – which (for good or ill) gave Marxism the political energy with which it entered the 20th century.
Both were middle-class children of 1820s Rhineland, who wrestled with the twin inheritance of Romanticism and Enlightenment, and edged towards socialism through the works of Hegel.

How a Trinidadian Communist Invented London’s Biggest Party
Jones was an atypical member of the Windrush generation. Born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1915, she lived in Harlem for 30 years before arriving in London in 1955. Her journey to her life there featured many hardships: She had been afflicted by tuberculosis as a teenager and she was imprisoned in the United States under the McCarran Internal Security Act for her political work with the Communist Party before ultimately being exiled to Britain. One of the most widely circulated portraits of Jones shows her reading a copy of “Pages from a Worker’s Life” by the American Communist leader William Z. Foster.

The Marxism Festival is the annual summer school event of the Socialist Workers’ Party (SWP). Our rejection of this year's request to book rooms at the University of London Union for Marxism Festival 2014 is due to the fact that the Socialist Workers' Party has, over the last year, proven itself to be a corrupt, rape apologist organisation which prides itself in creating an unsafe space for young women. As elected officers – like many others in the student movement – we see the SWP’s handling of rape allegations against a senior member as a despicable denial of sexism.
At Marxism 2013, many students and mostly women activists, who attended in order to protest against the SWP, were submitted to verbal and physical abuse by members of the party.
The Socialist Workers' Party has tried to silence any activist within the party who has tried to fight for justice for the women who have been victims of sexual violence at the the hands of the leadership. Instead of supporting those women, the SWP instead started a victim-blaming campaign and protected the perpetrator. To quote a member of the SWP "we aren't rape apologists unless we believe all women tell the truth, and guess what some women and children lie".
To the SWP, we say that you are beyond help and progressive debate. You are disgrace to the left and we have no wish to help support any growth in your oppressive organisation. The bottom line is that you do not have any right to use this space, you are not welcome here or anywhere near our union and we will not be harassed by your organisation. As students and activists, we stand united against sexism.

I received an email from the Senior Governance Officer at the Labour Party apologising for the delay, saying that because I’d been a member (mostly) since 1986, it would take them a long time to gather the info.
Whilst the Chronicle (see post of 24th April here) is regulated by IPSO and must respond to their inquiries, other publications, such as The Jewish News, are not. JN are sadly not regulated by anybody and the only way to deal with slander from them is in the courts.
Then, five days later, I received notice from Labour that I really was being suspended. The letter stated this was for a possible breach of rule 2.1.8 (which I later found does not exist!) and demanded confidentiality. But Labour HQ had broadcast my suspension to the Jewish press at least five days before they told me. I therefore wrote to Labour Disputes Dept (copying in the NEC) pointing out it was they who had breached confidentiality and demanded an explanation. I also lodged a complaint to Labour HQ. Predictably Labour have ignored my requests. I also submitted a Subject Access Request (SAR) to Labour’s Data officer; under GDPR they must give up what they have on file about me.
Stop the War
I have learnt that Stop the War coalition are really a front for the SWP, who in Scotland are sympathetic to the Friends of Israel. Thus the Zionists effectively dictate Stop the War policy. Their hypocrisy was exposed when I sought their support for the Glasgow ZIR rally for Palestine to mark the Great March of Return. None of their patrons – Brian Eno, Diane Abbott MP, George Galloway, Mark Rylance, Tariq Ali plus 22 other luminaries cared to consider my complaint. In August 1939, fearing that German physicists were already racing to exploit the newly discovered phenomenon of nuclear fission, Einstein signed a letter to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt warning that “the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source of energy in the immediate future”—that is, a bomb.
Roosevelt’s response was the Manhattan Project: a crash program to develop the atomic bomb before Hitler could.
in the spring of 1945 he did write another letter urging the President to meet with Manhattan Project scientists who were concerned about the rush to finish the bomb and use it, even though Germany was near defeat and had clearly given up on uranium.

Present literature precisely describes the contents of the criticism. Conversely, it obscures the huge changes in both domestic and international political settings. For example, within almost a year after Chen Boda, who played a central role in the criticism of Einstein in Beijing, fell out of favour with the party leadership, the Sino-US rapprochement and the Lin Biao incident occurred. The Sino-US rapprochement enabled scientists of both countries to communicate with each other. It meant the end of the criticism of ‘bourgeois academicism’. Moreover, Lin Biao’s alleged attempt at coup d’état made people sceptical of the CR.
This article argues that both domestic and diplomatic political upheaval played a crucial role in the rise and fall of the criticism of Einstein. That enabled Zhou Enlai to move on to rebuild theoretical study of science and to allow scientists to build a high-energy accelerator.
This article uses the diaries of Zhu Kezhen, a vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), meteorologist and educator, to incorporate the perspectives of his and his fellow scientists who were engaged in building nuclear weapons and a high-energy accelerator.

Einstein was a prominent supporter of Labor Zionism
In the November 1948 presidential election Einstein supported former vice-president Henry A. Wallace’s Progressive Party, which advocated a pro-Soviet foreign policy – but which also at the time (like the USSR) strongly supported the new state of Israel.
The party served as a safe haven for communists, liberals.
In 1918, Einstein was one of the founding members of the German Democratic Party, a liberal party.[3]:83 However, later in his life, Einstein was in favor of socialism and in opposition to capitalism.

Given Einstein's links to Germany and Zionism, his socialist ideals, and his links to Communist figures, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation kept a file on Einstein that grew to 1,427 pages.
From the 1930s and until his death in the 1950s, a primary focus of Einstein political work was promoting international cooperation. He promoted the creation of a new world organization to replace the League of Nations, and advocated reforming the United Nations once it had been created. He was also in favor of world federalism.
He wrote hundreds of letters, speeches, gave interviews and directly advocated the issue of internationalism in various forms.
In 1951, Einstein wrote that the United Nations was "merely an organization of delegates from national governments and not of independent individuals who, guided solely by their personal convictions, represent the populations of the various countries. The Palmach contributed significantly to Israeli culture and ethos, well beyond its military contribution. Its members formed the backbone of the Israel Defense Forces high command for many years, and were prominent in Israeli politics, literature and culture.

The former Communist National Committee member Bella Dodd asserts in School of Darkness that the Progressive Party of 1948 had Wallace as its voice and "inspirational leader" but was really controlled by top U.S. Communists, in particular William Z. Foster and Eugene Dennis, who filled the staff of the new party with people loyal to themselves and dictated self-defeating policies to the Progressive Party. Dodd concluded:
The reason they wanted a small limited Progressive Party was because it was the only kind they could control. They wanted to control it because they wanted a political substitute for the Communist Party, which they expected would soon be made illegal. A limited and controlled Progressive Party would be a cover organization and a substitute for the Communist Party if the latter were outlawed.
Bella Dodd ranks with Whittaker Chambers as a leading converted communist. Her testimony before investigating committees revealed the extent to which communist infiltration had taken place in America, particularly among teachers in schools and colleges.
The Trade Union Unity League (TUUL) was an industrial union umbrella organization under the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) between 1929 and 1935. The group was an American affiliate of the Red International of Labor Unions. The formation of the TUUL was the result of the Communist International's Third Period policy, which ordered affiliated Communist Parties to pursue a strategy of dual unionism and thus abandon attempts at "bore from within" existing trade unions.
The Red International of Labor Unions (RILU) (Russian: Красный интернационал профсоюзов—Krasnyi internatsional profsoyuzov), commonly known as the Profintern, was an international body established by the Communist International with the aim of coordinating Communist activities within trade unions. Formally established in 1921, the Profintern was intended to act as a counterweight to the influence of the so-called "Amsterdam International", the social democratic International Federation of Trade Unions, an organization branded as class collaborationist and an impediment to revolution by the Comintern.

A popular front is a broad coalition of different political groupings, usually made up of leftists and centrists. They are very broad and sometimes include centrist radical or liberal forces as well as social-democratic and communist groups. Popular fronts are larger in scope than united fronts.
In addition to the general definition, the term "popular front" also has a specific meaning in the history of 1930s Europe and the United States and in the history of Communist Parties. During this time, the front populaire referred to the alliance of political parties in France that was aimed at resisting fascism.
The term "national front" is similar in name but describes a different form of ruling, using ostensibly-noncommunist parties that worked with the Communist Party as part of a "coalition", which was used in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, although it can also refer to National Front parties that are, or claim to be, a coalition of right-wing Nationalist forces instead, although in practice these are often much smaller.
Not all coalitions who use the term "popular front" meet the definition for "popular fronts", and not all popular fronts use the term "popular front" in their name. The same applies to "united fronts".
Until early 1933, the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) was regarded as the world's most successful communist party in terms of membership and electoral results. As a result, the Communist International, or Comintern, expected national Communist Parties to base their political style on the German example. That approach, known as the "class against class" strategy, or the ultra-left "Third Period", expected that the economic crisis and the trauma of war would increasingly radicalise public opinion and that if the communists remained aloof from mainstream democratic politics, they would benefit from the populist mood and be swept to power. As such, non-communist socialist parties were denounced as "social fascist".
Great Britain
There were attempts in Great Britain to found a popular front, against the National Government's appeasement of Nazi Germany, between the Labour Party, the Liberal Party, the Independent Labour Party, the Communist Party and even rebellious elements of the Conservative Party under Winston Churchill, but they failed mainly because of opposition from within the Labour Party, which was seething with anger over communist efforts to take over union locals. In addition, the incompatibility of liberal and socialist approaches also caused many Liberals to be hostile.[4]
United States
The Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) had been quite hostile to the New Deal until 1935, but it suddenly reversed positions and tried to form a popular front with the New Dealers.[5] It sought a joint Socialist-Communist ticket with Norman Thomas's Socialist Party of America in the 1936 presidential election, but the Socialists rejected the overture. The communists also then offered support to Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. The Popular Front saw the Communist Party taking a very patriotic and populist line, later called Browderism.
The Popular Front has been summarized by historian Kermit McKenzie as:
...An imaginative, flexible program of strategy and tactics, in which Communists were permitted to exploit the symbols of patriotism, to assume the role of defenders of national independence, to attack fascism without demanding an end to capitalism as the only remedy, and, most important, to enter upon alliances with other parties, on the basis of fronts or on the basis of a government in which Communists might participate.[6]
McKenzie asserted that to be a mere tactical expedient, with the broad goals of communists for the overthrow of capitalism through revolution remaining unchanged.[6]
Cultural historian Michael Denning has challenged the Communist Party-centric view of the US popular front, saying that the "fellow travelers" in the US actually composed the majority of the movement. In his view, Communist party membership was only one (optional) element of leftist US culture at the time

arrested a ‘Mr and Mrs Noulens’ on suspicion of being agents of the Communist

Litten has also discovered telegrams Einstein sent to a number of US

on Foreign Relations, asking him to intervene. One of Borah’s replies was
addressed to Einstein, care of the Internationale Arbeiter-Hilfe (Workers
International Relief) organisation in Berlin, another communist group.
Taken together with his espousal of pacifist causes, Einstein’s involvement
in the Noulens affair and his relationship with the IAH would have provided
grounds for the FBI’s suspicions, says Litten. ‘An investigation, especially
in a military context, would have been justified.’

Of course, LSE students needed a base in which to meet and from which to circulate propaganda among themselves, to other colleges and to workers. The ULU authorities had offered minor obstruction to the LSE militants, but there was no definite prospect that ULU would be closed to us. In any case, even if convenient it was not essential. And LSE students could not be mobilised to defend its use – indeed only a few of them could be mobilised for anything at that point. There was little justification in the LSE struggle itself for seizing ULU – unless it was argued that this would spark off nationwide actions. And, this was in fact the basis on which the occupation was voted, by a meeting in which LSE students were a small minority. Outsiders, identified with Maoist and Posadist tendencies, proposed an occupation in order to establish a ‘revolutionary centre’ for the ‘working masses’. They were not challenged by an NLR spokesman from LSE whose ‘heroic’ speech decided the issue – he too saw the act as indicating a ‘rebirth of a revolutionary movement’. LSE students who spoke against it, and for maintaining direction of the struggle by LSE students, were shouted down.
It became clear the next day that LSE students who had not been present the previous night were even further alienated by this ‘revolutionisation’ of their struggle. It was a big mistake for the militants, because it gave the impression that the struggle was not for non-revolutionaries in LSE, but for ‘revolutionaries’ from all over London (who were themselves isolating themselves from any local base they may have had). It could not have the effect outside LSE which only a strong united stand of the LSE students themselves could have had. The LSE militants began to understand that this was what they had to work towards, and that the ULU occupation was actually a threat to this task. On Tuesday the occupation was ended by a virtually unanimous vote of LSE militants. Many of those who had supported it on Monday were however to disappear from the scene after this, and left-wingers in other colleges who did not understand what was done were disillusioned.
When King Mob was going at full blast, after the LSE sit~in there was a sit‑in at the University of London Union and we got involved in that. It lasted several days Everyone was sleeping on the floor and all that. The New Left crowd tried to run it. We gave Robin Blackburn a really bad time, howled him down, told him he was a wanker. They were very worried this, we might damage things ‑ don’t scratch the paintwork ‑ so a bunch of people went and bust open the swimming pool and had this huge swimming party. The whole thing was very fraught because you’d got this mass of students, the New Left people telling them to be serious and responsible, and King Mob telling them to get their rocks off, let it all hang out, etc. It was very iffy, because the great mass in the middle were swaying both ways.

On 20th January 2009, Kings College students occupied a lecture theatre to demand the immediate revocation of then Israeli President Shimon Peres’s Honorary Doctorate, awarded to him the previous November by the College without consultation of the students. Shimon Peres was dubbed “the butcher of Qana” for his role in the massacre of this Lebanese village in 1996. As the Israeli president, he was responsible for the 2009 massacre in Gaza and the ongoing blockade.
Over 50 students took over a lecture theatre at the Central London Strand campus on the morning of the 20th, following a wave of protest occupations that have swept across UK universities.
SOAS, LSE and Essex universities began the movement in solidarity with Palestine after the start of the Gaza onslaught, and numerous other universities followed. Kings students took action hoping to put pressure on the university to condemn the Israeli offence on Gaza and Revoke Peres’s award and show solidarity to the people in Gaza.
The move came following the King’s College Council decision to award President Shimon Peres with an honorary doctorate for “recognition of the efforts of Mr Peres to find a peaceful solution to conflicts in the Middle East” in November 2008, and the subsequent silence of the Principal following the devastating assault on the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli invasion and attack on Gaza killed over thousands of Palestinians and injured tens of thousands. Many thousands of civilians were left homeless. There were international calls for an investigation into the war crimes committed during the attack, wherein Israel stood accused of using banned weapons such as phosphorus bombs, attacking medical facilities, including the killing of 12 ambulance men in marked vehicles, and killing large numbers of policemen who had no military role, amongst other actions.
Occupation spokeswoman Victoria said, “The Principal’s initial response did not answer our concerns. Peres’s role in the Qana massacre in April 1996, involving the shelling of a UN refugee camp in Lebanon, was completely ignored. Given the very serious war crimes allegations that Israel is now facing due to its recent actions in the Gaza Strip, we are once again calling on the doctorate to be immediately revoked by King’s College London.”

turnout is the biggest attendance for any event ever organised by Socialist Appeal, the Marxist tendency in Britain. And most noticeably, this large attendance was matched by an equally impressive level of political and theoretical discussion.
In both quantity and quality, then, Revolution Festival 2020 shows that the Marxists in Britain are going from strength to strength.
Belly of the beast
Saturday’s discussions concluded with a plenary rally on the upcoming US elections, taking place in the context of the deepest crisis in the history of capitalism.
Alan Woods, editor of In Defence of Marxism, started the rally by providing a perspective on the global situation. He explained how the capitalist system is at a complete impasse, and how the bourgeois politicians have no answers or solutions to offer.
After Alan was Tom Trottier from the editorial board of Socialist Revolution, sister publication of Socialist Appeal: written from within the belly of the beast, in the USA.
Alan succinctly summarised the underlying message of the festival: capitalism has got to go – and workers and youth must arm themselves with Marxist ideas in order to put an end to this rotten system.
One of the most important points to take away from the weekend, as Alan underlined, is the essential need for theory. Marxist ideas are not a matter of secondary importance; they are not an optional extra for those genuinely seeking to change the world.
As Lenin famously remarked, without revolutionary theory, there can be no revolutionary movement. Marxist theory is therefore vital as a guide to action, to organising, and to smashing capitalism.
The Revolution Festival – along with this summer’s International Marxist University – have been important landmarks in showing the power and necessity of Marxist ideas, which are only genuinely defended and represented these days by the International Marxist Tendency.

“Marx was a genius; we others were at best talented.” The secret to the friendship between Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels – perhaps the greatest intellectual companionship in Western political thought – lay in Engels’s acceptance of Marx’s philosophical prowess.
So Friedrich Engels chose to sacrifice much of what gave him meaning and pleasure in life to support the work of Marx. For two long decades, working as a mill-owner in Manchester, he played the role of a cotton-lord capitalist, to fund the intellectual origins of Marxism. Yet we should never think of Engels just as Marx’s money-man. In fact, not only did his time in the Manchester textile trade provide first-hand data for the writing of Das Kapital, he was also responsible for some of Marxism’s more interesting applications. More than that, it was Engels’s codification of Marx’s philosophy – particularly after Karl’s death – which (for good or ill) gave Marxism the political energy with which it entered the 20th century.
Both were middle-class children of 1820s Rhineland, who wrestled with the twin inheritance of Romanticism and Enlightenment, and edged towards socialism through the works of Hegel.

How a Trinidadian Communist Invented London’s Biggest Party
Jones was an atypical member of the Windrush generation. Born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1915, she lived in Harlem for 30 years before arriving in London in 1955. Her journey to her life there featured many hardships: She had been afflicted by tuberculosis as a teenager and she was imprisoned in the United States under the McCarran Internal Security Act for her political work with the Communist Party before ultimately being exiled to Britain. One of the most widely circulated portraits of Jones shows her reading a copy of “Pages from a Worker’s Life” by the American Communist leader William Z. Foster.

The Marxism Festival is the annual summer school event of the Socialist Workers’ Party (SWP). Our rejection of this year's request to book rooms at the University of London Union for Marxism Festival 2014 is due to the fact that the Socialist Workers' Party has, over the last year, proven itself to be a corrupt, rape apologist organisation which prides itself in creating an unsafe space for young women. As elected officers – like many others in the student movement – we see the SWP’s handling of rape allegations against a senior member as a despicable denial of sexism.
At Marxism 2013, many students and mostly women activists, who attended in order to protest against the SWP, were submitted to verbal and physical abuse by members of the party.
The Socialist Workers' Party has tried to silence any activist within the party who has tried to fight for justice for the women who have been victims of sexual violence at the the hands of the leadership. Instead of supporting those women, the SWP instead started a victim-blaming campaign and protected the perpetrator. To quote a member of the SWP "we aren't rape apologists unless we believe all women tell the truth, and guess what some women and children lie".
To the SWP, we say that you are beyond help and progressive debate. You are disgrace to the left and we have no wish to help support any growth in your oppressive organisation. The bottom line is that you do not have any right to use this space, you are not welcome here or anywhere near our union and we will not be harassed by your organisation. As students and activists, we stand united against sexism.

I received an email from the Senior Governance Officer at the Labour Party apologising for the delay, saying that because I’d been a member (mostly) since 1986, it would take them a long time to gather the info.
Whilst the Chronicle (see post of 24th April here) is regulated by IPSO and must respond to their inquiries, other publications, such as The Jewish News, are not. JN are sadly not regulated by anybody and the only way to deal with slander from them is in the courts.
Then, five days later, I received notice from Labour that I really was being suspended. The letter stated this was for a possible breach of rule 2.1.8 (which I later found does not exist!) and demanded confidentiality. But Labour HQ had broadcast my suspension to the Jewish press at least five days before they told me. I therefore wrote to Labour Disputes Dept (copying in the NEC) pointing out it was they who had breached confidentiality and demanded an explanation. I also lodged a complaint to Labour HQ. Predictably Labour have ignored my requests. I also submitted a Subject Access Request (SAR) to Labour’s Data officer; under GDPR they must give up what they have on file about me.
Stop the War
I have learnt that Stop the War coalition are really a front for the SWP, who in Scotland are sympathetic to the Friends of Israel. Thus the Zionists effectively dictate Stop the War policy. Their hypocrisy was exposed when I sought their support for the Glasgow ZIR rally for Palestine to mark the Great March of Return. None of their patrons – Brian Eno, Diane Abbott MP, George Galloway, Mark Rylance, Tariq Ali plus 22 other luminaries cared to consider my complaint. Albert Einstein once pleaded for the freedom of Chinese revolutionary Chen Duxiu, one of the founders of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in 1932 has gone viral on China’s social media, prompting Chinese netizens to comment that truth and humanity are borderless.
A post uploaded on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo on Monday drew lots of reactions, and the related hashtag “Einstein helped Chen Duxiu” has been viewed more than 290 million times as of Wednesday.
The post pointed out that when Chen was arrested in 1932 by the Kuomintang, Einstein and other academicians from different countries including UK and US wrote letters to Chiang Kai-shek, head of the Kuomintang, to plead for his release.

Present literature precisely describes the contents of the criticism. Conversely, it obscures the huge changes in both domestic and international political settings. For example, within almost a year after Chen Boda, who played a central role in the criticism of Einstein in Beijing, fell out of favour with the party leadership, the Sino-US rapprochement and the Lin Biao incident occurred. The Sino-US rapprochement enabled scientists of both countries to communicate with each other. It meant the end of the criticism of ‘bourgeois academicism’. Moreover, Lin Biao’s alleged attempt at coup d’état made people sceptical of the CR.
This article argues that both domestic and diplomatic political upheaval played a crucial role in the rise and fall of the criticism of Einstein. That enabled Zhou Enlai to move on to rebuild theoretical study of science and to allow scientists to build a high-energy accelerator.

Einstein was a prominent supporter of Labor Zionism
In the November 1948 presidential election Einstein supported former vice-president Henry A. Wallace’s Progressive Party, which advocated a pro-Soviet foreign policy – but which also at the time (like the USSR) strongly supported the new state of Israel.
The party served as a safe haven for communists, liberals.
In 1918, Einstein was one of the founding members of the German Democratic Party, a liberal party.[3]:83 However, later in his life, Einstein was in favor of socialism and in opposition to capitalism.

Given Einstein's links to Germany and Zionism, his socialist ideals, and his links to Communist figures, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation kept a file on Einstein that grew to 1,427 pages.
From the 1930s and until his death in the 1950s, a primary focus of Einstein political work was promoting international cooperation. He promoted the creation of a new world organization to replace the League of Nations, and advocated reforming the United Nations once it had been created. He was also in favor of world federalism.
He wrote hundreds of letters, speeches, gave interviews and directly advocated the issue of internationalism in various forms.
In 1951, Einstein wrote that the United Nations was "merely an organization of delegates from national governments and not of independent individuals who, guided solely by their personal convictions, represent the populations of the various countries. The former Communist National Committee member Bella Dodd asserts in School of Darkness that the Progressive Party of 1948 had Wallace as its voice and "inspirational leader" but was really controlled by top U.S. Communists, in particular William Z. Foster and Eugene Dennis, who filled the staff of the new party with people loyal to themselves and dictated self-defeating policies to the Progressive Party. Dodd concluded:
The reason they wanted a small limited Progressive Party was because it was the only kind they could control. They wanted to control it because they wanted a political substitute for the Communist Party, which they expected would soon be made illegal. A limited and controlled Progressive Party would be a cover organization and a substitute for the Communist Party if the latter were outlawed.
Bella Dodd ranks with Whittaker Chambers as a leading converted communist. Her testimony before investigating committees revealed the extent to which communist infiltration had taken place in America, particularly among teachers in schools and colleges.
The Trade Union Unity League (TUUL) was an industrial union umbrella organization under the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) between 1929 and 1935. The group was an American affiliate of the Red International of Labor Unions. The formation of the TUUL was the result of the Communist International's Third Period policy, which ordered affiliated Communist Parties to pursue a strategy of dual unionism and thus abandon attempts at "bore from within" existing trade unions.

A popular front is a broad coalition of different political groupings, usually made up of leftists and centrists. They are very broad and sometimes include centrist radical or liberal forces as well as social-democratic and communist groups. Popular fronts are larger in scope than united fronts.
In addition to the general definition, the term "popular front" also has a specific meaning in the history of 1930s Europe and the United States and in the history of Communist Parties. During this time, the front populaire referred to the alliance of political parties in France that was aimed at resisting fascism.
The term "national front" is similar in name but describes a different form of ruling, using ostensibly-noncommunist parties that worked with the Communist Party as part of a "coalition", which was used in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, although it can also refer to National Front parties that are, or claim to be, a coalition of right-wing Nationalist forces instead, although in practice these are often much smaller.
Not all coalitions who use the term "popular front" meet the definition for "popular fronts", and not all popular fronts use the term "popular front" in their name. The same applies to "united fronts".
Until early 1933, the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) was regarded as the world's most successful communist party in terms of membership and electoral results. As a result, the Communist International, or Comintern, expected national Communist Parties to base their political style on the German example. That approach, known as the "class against class" strategy, or the ultra-left "Third Period", expected that the economic crisis and the trauma of war would increasingly radicalise public opinion and that if the communists remained aloof from mainstream democratic politics, they would benefit from the populist mood and be swept to power. As such, non-communist socialist parties were denounced as "social fascist".
Great Britain
There were attempts in Great Britain to found a popular front, against the National Government's appeasement of Nazi Germany, between the Labour Party, the Liberal Party, the Independent Labour Party, the Communist Party and even rebellious elements of the Conservative Party under Winston Churchill, but they failed mainly because of opposition from within the Labour Party, which was seething with anger over communist efforts to take over union locals. In addition, the incompatibility of liberal and socialist approaches also caused many Liberals to be hostile.[4]
United States
The Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) had been quite hostile to the New Deal until 1935, but it suddenly reversed positions and tried to form a popular front with the New Dealers.[5] It sought a joint Socialist-Communist ticket with Norman Thomas's Socialist Party of America in the 1936 presidential election, but the Socialists rejected the overture. The communists also then offered support to Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. The Popular Front saw the Communist Party taking a very patriotic and populist line, later called Browderism.
The Popular Front has been summarized by historian Kermit McKenzie as:
...An imaginative, flexible program of strategy and tactics, in which Communists were permitted to exploit the symbols of patriotism, to assume the role of defenders of national independence, to attack fascism without demanding an end to capitalism as the only remedy, and, most important, to enter upon alliances with other parties, on the basis of fronts or on the basis of a government in which Communists might participate.[6]
McKenzie asserted that to be a mere tactical expedient, with the broad goals of communists for the overthrow of capitalism through revolution remaining unchanged.[6]
Cultural historian Michael Denning has challenged the Communist Party-centric view of the US popular front, saying that the "fellow travelers" in the US actually composed the majority of the movement. In his view, Communist party membership was only one (optional) element of leftist US culture at the time

arrested a ‘Mr and Mrs Noulens’ on suspicion of being agents of the Communist

never been uncovered, a Hilaire Noulens was the head of the Pan-Pacific

and a leading member of the Far Eastern Bureau of the Comintern.

their release. Investigating the case, Litten has found that one such body,
the League against Imperialism and for National Independence, had Albert
Einstein as its honorary president.
Litten has also discovered telegrams Einstein sent to a number of US
senators, including one to William Borah, the chairman of the Senate Committee
on Foreign Relations, asking him to intervene. One of Borah’s replies was
addressed to Einstein, care of the Internationale Arbeiter-Hilfe (Workers
International Relief) organisation in Berlin, another communist group.
Taken together with his espousal of pacifist causes, Einstein’s involvement
in the Noulens affair and his relationship with the IAH would have provided
grounds for the FBI’s suspicions, says Litten. ‘An investigation, especially
in a military context, would have been justified.’
